Urban Fantasy Cover Dismay

So over on The Lost Review Of Odd Books, I looked at Urban Fantasy covers and found that of the covers with characters on them, they could be categorized into four types.

  • Leather Jackets
  • Tank Tops
  • Hoodies and Blazers
  • And the Basic Blouse

Regular readers of my blog should be aware enough to know that this is not my style. I find it to be rather plain and boring.

Let’s start with leather jackets. They are classic, cool, and common. I’ve one, it’s lime green and has a pioneer cut…. errrr… maybe I should switch topics to moto jackets. They are cool. I plan on making one with Leg O’ Mutton sleeves…

Moving on!

I’ve nothing against a plain light colored blouse. They have their uses. (like being eye catching on a dark cover) But delicately decorated vintage ones work just as well. And you could survive with a darker one. They manage other dark tops just fine!!!

I’ve nothing against hoodies and blazers, they do tell me a little about the character other than the fact that they are cool. Often not much, but I guess it’s too much work to get a set of custom pictures taken in a custom hoodie…

I get tank tops, you want freedom of movement. And black doesn’t show blood.

I just want to know, why don’t pastel lovers ever have adventures, or farm kids (hey, camo, plaid, and tractor supply T’s), or K-stans, or Lolitas, or living history folks, vintage wearers, armed forces, or anyone other than basic people. I know we’re rarer, but we still exist and are fairly common. Don’t deny that you know at least one person who makes looking slightly different part of their identity. YOU ARE ON MY BLOG!!!

AND where are the winter adventures???

So authors, please be more creative with your characters. Let it show on your covers. Don’t be afraid of getting something more unique. Have a custom photo taken.
